Boon’s Solutions

Introduction

Boon offers two programs that can end the reading crisis:

SOR Teacher Training Scholarships make training in the science of reading more accessible at highly vetted, top-tier training organizations across America. To support that training, we also offer a limited number of scholarships in social and emotional learning.

Pledge Literacy Interventions offers free, tutorial instruction grounded in the science of reading for low-income and minority students. Boon exclusively hires Wilson© Level I and II Certified reading experts to deliver the instruction, either remotely or in person, across the country.

SOR Teacher Training Scholarships

Science of Reading Scholarships

Boon Donors support free SOR training for individual K-12 public school teachers through 12 expert training partners across the United States. These partners provide coursework and practicums for all levels of interest, from childcare providers to expert teacher trainers. Their combined training capacity and expertise exceed that of all graduate programs combined.

Advantages:

  • SOR scholarships provide immediate training for teachers, outside of school, on the teachers’ schedules.
  • Boon’s funded training partners deliver results that are effective and sustainable
  • Training in structured language instruction methods is usually not offered in most in-school professional development programs, and it is not offered in the vast majority of higher education teacher preparation programs.

Pledge Literacy Interventions

Tutorial-Intervention Instruction

Boon Donors offer free, personalized SOR instruction for low-income students who struggle to achieve reading proficiency. Currently operating in 12 states with the potential to expand to all 50, the program exclusively employs highly trained, expert Wilson© Level I and II Certified interventionists, whose experience allows them to swiftly improve these learners’ reading skills.

Advantages

  •  Wilson© Level I and II Certified interventionists have extraordinary skills in addition to years, often decades of teaching experience. They are not providing homework help, and they are not volunteers. They are experts who can raise a child’s reading proficiency by one grade level or more in just 40 hours.
  • Pledge operates outside of school, after school, or during the summer, at times that are convenient for the students’ families and when students are not distracted by regular classroom activities.
  • Free professional assessment and evaluation that far surpasses what textbook companies provide for public school classrooms. Typically, professional assessments in the market cost $100 or more.
  • Should it be needed, free dyslexia screening, made available by Boon board member Dr. David Hurford, director of the Center for Research, Evaluation, and Awareness of Dyslexia (Center for READing), which is valued at $1,000-$3,000.
