Vision

We believe in an America where all children master reading — breaking cycles of poverty and unlocking higher education, better health, stronger communities, and a more just democracy.

Mission

Our mission is to transform lives, one teacher and one student at a time, by directing private giving to scholarships for teacher training in structured literacy and free, science-based reading interventions for students who are most in need.

Our Work

Boon is a platform that gathers widespread public donor support, creating an outsize impact and ensuring the sustainability of funding for SOR Teacher Training Scholarships and Pledge Literacy Interventions. These two programs focus on training individual teachers in and tutoring individual students using explicit, structured instruction methods based on the science of reading, helping to end the reading crisis.

In addition to its two educational programs, Boon:

• Advocates for and builds awareness about the reading crisis and the ideal reading instruction that benefits all learners, including those with dyslexia;
• Helps grow a national community of citizens who understand that reading is the gateway skill to academic, career, and life success in the 21st century;
• Manages collaborations with our best-in-class teacher training allies that offer proven methods for teaching all children to read, including those with dyslexia;
• Shares knowledge and resources to guide teachers to obtain training that is immediately accessible and available, while reducing or eliminating the tuition expense;
• Deploys teacher trainers and reading intervention experts to strategic and underserved markets;
• Continues research to be the most informed, national education nonprofit facilitator in the reading field, and
• Publishes VIM Magazine, a celebration of the importance and joy of reading that features teacher stories, galleries of art, profiles of students and families, and meaningful books, and highlights exemplary organizations in the education field.
